flyaway > Our first night in Washington State we stayed at the Garden Suites Hotel in Des Moines, WA. Our room faced an empty lot next door, not the beautiful view of Puget Sound behind the hotel.
flyaway > A map showing the placement of the buildings as they were in 1953, when Henryton was still operating as a tuberculosis sanatorium for African Americans.

When the complex was converted to an institution for retarded adults, Building 3 was converted to the administration building. The large hospital building in the exterior and interior photographs is Building 2, on the east side of the complex.

The swimming pool is between Building 2A/B and the physicians' and nurses' cottage.
flyaway > The complex was completely self-contained, even having its own power plant. The plant was at the bottom of the hill next to the railroad tracks to facilitate the delivery of coal.

flyaway > This was the power plant for Henryton Center, a state hospital established in 1922 for the care of African-American tuberculosis patients. The power plant is on the north shore of the Patapsco River in Henryton, Maryland; the rest of the hospital complex is up the hill, behind this building. The center was abandoned after it closed in 1985. There are more pictures of the complex in my Henryton Center gallery.

flyaway > The post office room, complete with USPS logo on the door. The walls throughout the complex are painted in very bright turquoise, pink, yellow and green.

flyaway > This was the kitchen, in an addition behind the old main building. A paulownia tree has grown up through the roof -- the roots and trunk are inside a wall in the building (see next three photos).
