flyaway > These carpenter ants (Camponotus americanus) are working on their aphid farm. Aphids suck nutritious juice out of plants, but often suck out more than they can digest and secrete the excess, called honeydew. The ants milk each aphid, bringing the honeydew back to the nest to feed the other members of the colony. This is a symbiotic relationship; in return, the ants tend the aphids, protecting them from predators and sometimes moving them to richer grazing grounds. Some species of ants even bring the aphids' eggs into the safety of their own nest, and feed the aphid young until they are ready for grazing.

flyaway > I found this ladybug stowaway on our balcony. I hoped it would stay alive until I could release it at our first stop, but it was two days and it didn't make it.
