flyaway > A map showing the placement of the buildings as they were in 1953, when Henryton was still operating as a tuberculosis sanatorium for African Americans.

When the complex was converted to an institution for retarded adults, Building 3 was converted to the administration building. The large hospital building in the exterior and interior photographs is Building 2, on the east side of the complex.

The swimming pool is between Building 2A/B and the physicians' and nurses' cottage.
flyaway > The complex was completely self-contained, even having its own power plant. The plant was at the bottom of the hill next to the railroad tracks to facilitate the delivery of coal.

flyaway > This was the kitchen, in an addition behind the old main building. A paulownia tree has grown up through the roof -- the roots and trunk are inside a wall in the building (see next three photos).

flyaway > The range hoods in the kitchen, which once ventilated six large commercial ranges. The ranges are gone, probably destroyed by vandals.

flyaway > The other side of the paulownia trunk, in what used to be a small walk-in refrigerator.

flyaway > These photos attest to the power of nature. The paulownia tree somehow took root inside this wall. As it grew, it burst the wall and broke through the ceiling and the roof.
