flyaway > Brood X is gone, but their legacy is still visible. Each female makes a slit near the tip of a twig to deposit her eggs; it kills the tip of the twig, but it's not at all harmful to mature trees (in fact, the pruning is beneficial). The brown-tipped trees will be with us for the rest of the season, until the leaves fall in autumn. Then the cicadas will be nothing but a memory until they come again in 2021.
