flyaway > This is the Sideline Hill Cut on Interstate 68 in western Maryland, about 6 miles west of Hancock. When the cut was made to build the highway in 1986 it exposed 810 feet of strata in a tightly folded syncline. These rocks are 325-350 million years old. We were there on June 7 and 9, 2002, on the way to and from the Maryland Ornithological Society's conference at Deep Creek Lake at the far western end of Maryland.
flyaway > This is the south wall of the cut. The interpretive center there has fascinating information about the geology of the mountain, part of the Appalachian chain.
