![flyaway > Union Dam in the Patapsco River. The water is very low now due to drought, but a flood last spring overtopped the dam, sending an entire tree over it.
The first dam here was built about 1808 by the Union Manufacturing Company. It was replaced in 1914 by a new concrete dam built by J.W. Dickey Textile Mills, which were on the far side of the river in Oella. The dam was decommissioned around 1950, but remained intact until 1972, when the floods from Hurricane Agnes carved out a route around it (left) [see aerial view]. After that the edge started washing away so fast that the whole bank was covered with riprap to prevent further erosion.
