flyaway > The view across the Wicomico River from the Whitehaven Ferry boat.
flyaway > The Whitehaven Ferry, which crosses the Wicomico River in Wicomico County, Maryland, dates back to 1685 and is the oldest publicly operated ferry in the country. It holds three cars, and is one of two Wicomico River ferries operated free of charge by the county.
flyaway > The Whitehaven Hotel was built in 1810 as a roadhouse or private home. It was expanded and renovated several times, but eventually fell into ruin. After being scheduled for demolition in 1994, the historic building was saved, and after restoration it now operates as a bed-and-breakfast.

In the late 1800s, the Village of Whitehaven was a busy town vwith shipyards, a canning factory, a new school and church, and several stores.. But commerce began shifting to the larger town of Salisbury, a few miles upriver; by the end of World War II, Whitehaven became a quiet residential community.
