Summer is a peaceful time after the riotous colors and baby-making frenzy of spring. Colors are more muted, young creatures are busy learning to take care of themselves, and now that the babies are out of the nest or den, parents are enjoying a well-deserved rest.

You may also enjoy my other Seasonal Nature galleries, my Bird and Animal galleries, and my Flower galleries.

flyaway > Cricket Creek Meander
A meander is being created at this slight curve. When the creek flows fast and high, silt and rocks are deposited on the inside of the curve where the movement of the water is slowest, and the bank is eroded on the outside where the water flows fastest. Eventually the creek will have a deep curve here.

flyaway > This odd little plant with the cluster of red berries atop a leafless brown stalk is a jack-in-the-pulpit. In late summer the leaves of the "pulpit" fall away and the "jack" becomes a cluster of berries.
