Periodical cicadas are surprising and fascinating creatures. Those in Maryland are members of Brood X. They were last here in 1987, and have been waiting underground ever since. The larva are now emerging to molt, mate, lay eggs and die. The next generation will crawl back underground to wait until 2021.

flyaway > After spending 17 years underground, Brood X began emerging in my neighborhood today. This female Magicicada cassini was the first one we saw. 5-14-04
flyaway > The cicadas are actually kind of pretty, in a buggy sort of way. With their lacy wings with orange borders and a "W" near the outside tip, bright red-orange eyes and black shells, they're actually sort of attractive. (I probably won't be saying that in a few days when they're everywhere.)

Cicadas sometimes fail to properly inflate their wings after molting; this one is an example.

flyaway > Doing the jitterbug? Actually she seems to be just getting the hang of walking. You can see the pointy little barbs on her toes that enable them to hang onto things; this newly-emerged cicada apparently hasn't yet figured out that she has to disconnect one toe before she can go ahead with the next.
It tickles slightly when they walk along your skin, and tickles a bit more when you tug those little feet loose. It doesn't hurt at all, though.

flyaway > There were thousands of molted nymph shells in and around this old tree at a nearby park. 5-17-04
flyaway > There were plenty of cicadas, too. 5-17-04
flyaway > So many nymphs emerged from under that tree that the leaves were all full, and they stacked themselves up like cordwood to molt!
