Periodical cicadas are surprising and fascinating creatures.
Those in Maryland are members of
Brood X. They were last here in 1987, and have been waiting underground ever since. The larva are now emerging to molt, mate, lay eggs and die. The next generation will crawl back underground to wait until 2021.
