flyaway > The Ellicott City Colored School was built in the 1880s. After the county schools were integrated the building gradually collapsed, but it has been completely restored.

Until 1950, students had to carry water in buckets from a nearby spring. Finally a well was dug and a pump installed.

The school never did get indoor toilets. Students and teachers alike had to use a pair of outhouses.

The interior of the school is used for educational programs, and hasn't been restored to the way it would have looked in 1953 when it closed.
