These are the two bluebird boxes I'm monitoring for 2006. One of them does have a family of Eastern Bluebirds; the other has Carolina Chickadees.

Box C1: Eastern Bluebirds
The box has been painted with its number.
April 26: There's a partially built nest in Box 1, made of nothing but long grasses. This could be the beginning of a Tree Swallow nest, but there are no feathers in it. It could be the beginning of a House Sparrow nest, but there's no trash or anything else in it. Could it be ... a bluebird nest??
May 2: It is a bluebird nest! And there was a bluebird in it -- the female was sitting on the eggs when I opened the box. I'm not sure which of us was more startled! We stared at each other for a second, then she flew off. There were four tiny eggs in the nest.
May 7: Five eggs now. No sign of the parents but the eggs are warm. Only the female bluebird incubates the eggs, but she normally spends as much as a third of the daylight hours away from the nest, so it's not surprising that I missed her.
May 9: No additional eggs have been laid. This will be a clutch of five.
May 16: The eggs have been turned and rearranged. The female was not present, but the male flew into the box briefly. What a lovely shade of blue the eggs are!
May 18: DAY 1 All five eggs hatched some time in the past 48 hours, most likely this morning. Three are peeping and gaping lustily; one is a little less active; the last is still exhausted from hatching. I hope the youngest hatchling is okay.
